Our history

The history of the Hostellerie du Suroît is closely linked with that of the former village of Melocheville and the prohibition era.

In the mid-19th century, Lock No. 2 of the old Beauharnois Canal was located where our parking lot stands today, and the building housed a general store. This place, owned by Joseph Meloche, was a trading spot where merchants from Lower and Upper Canada would barter.

Around 1900, the Hotel Ellice was born, also known as the Rapids View Hotel. In the 1920s, a second floor was added to accommodate more rooms… and so that the owner at the time, Richard Ellis, could obtain a liquor license for his establishment! It was at this point that the hotel became the go-to place for Sunday dances!

Nestled in the heart of Beauharnois

Beauharnois offers riverside and bucolic landscapes, a plethora of water activities, and is also a favorite location for cycling. And what about the Beauharlinois! They will charm you with their welcoming nature.

Its proximity to Montreal and its accessibility make Beauharnois a destination of choice for getaways of a few hours or several days. Lovers of open spaces, nature, and water are delighted every time!
